Library Vote

2024 BUDGET VOTE & TRUSTEE ELECTION-NOVEMBER 14, 2023

Initially chartered in 1957, the Ballston Community Public Library has served the community for 66 years. Both our community and library have changed since then, and the library worked with Senator Tedisco, Assemblywoman Walsh, Town of Ballston, the Southern Adirondack Library System and the New York State Library to update its legislation to reflect how special district libraries work today. This update created more transparency and accountability by providing district residents with direct input to the library, reflected in two significant changes. This year for the first time:

  • Residents of the Library District voted on the budget directly.
  • Residents of the Library Districted elected Trustees to govern the Library.

The Library Trustees and Staff would like to thank the community, volunteers and government officials who made this possible. The Ballston Community Public Library 2024 Budget passed by 88% and six Trustees were elected to terms beginning December 1, 2023.

LIBRARY DISTRICT

The Library District consists of The Town of Ballston, outside of the Village of Ballston Spa. The Library District does not follow the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District boundaries.

CHARTER UPDATE

Initially chartered in 1957, the Ballston Community Public Library has served the community for 66 years. Both our community and library have changed since then, and the library is updating its legislation to reflect how special district libraries work today. This update creates more transparency and accountability by providing district residents with direct input to the library, reflected in two significant changes:
• Residents of the Library District will vote on the budget directly.
• Currently, the Town of Ballston appoints library trustees. The new legislation ensures district residents elect library trustees.

The Library and Town of Ballston worked with Assemblywoman Walsh, Senator Tedisco, the Southern Adirondack Library System, and the New York State Library to coordinate this update. Governor Hochul signed the update into law as Chapter 336 on August 23, 2023.
