VolunTeen Sign Up & Orientation

As part of our Summer Reading program, students entering grades 6 –12  have the opportunity to be VolunTeens.  VolunTeens spend two hours each week at the library earning community service hours.  Each VolunTeen must be entering grades 6 – 12 and can sign up for one time slot.  Our program is six weeks long (June 24 – August 2) and you must be available for at least four of the six weeks.  Instead of a time slot, you may choose to be a substitute and fill in as needed.  When you sign up please let us know any days you will need to be absent this summer.  We appreciate all the good work done by VolunTeens each summer!  The Summer Reading program could not happen without you.  VoluntTeen Orientation and Sign Up will be Tuesday, June 4 at 7:00 PM.  This will be the first opportunity for sign up.  Spots are limited and will be given on a first come, first serve basis.

Sign Up & Orientation:

  • Tuesday, June 4 at 7:00 PM in the Library’s Community Room

To Be A VolunTeen:

  • It is the responsibility of the participant to let the staff know as soon as possible if they cannot make it to their shift due to illness, vacation, etc.
  • All VolunTeens need to arrive on time, polite and willing to help for their shifts.
  • All participants must remember that they are representing the library when volunteering and must adhere to all the Town of Ballston Community Library’s policies and procedures.
  • Participants do not need any previous work or volunteer experience, and we are happy to fill out Honor Society forms and letters of recommendation.

What VolunTeens Do:

  • VolunTeens set up, assist during and clean up Summer Reading programs.
  • VolunTeens staff the prize desk, talk to kids about what they’ve been reading, hand out prizes and starting this summer, will use our online summer reading program to track the number of prizes distributed.
  • VolunTeens plan and lead the Morning Crafts program.
  • VolunTeens work hard to keep the library neat during the summer, including straightening shelves, wiping down desks and tables, and organizing toys and puzzles.
  • VolunTeens are often asked to help with preparing craft projects, creating book displays and changing the sign in front of the library.
  • Each time slot comes with slightly different duties depending on the programs going on during that time.  If you have a preference to volunteer during a children’s program, during a busy time on the prize desk or even at a time where your interactions with children will be minimal, please let the staff know during sign up, we can help you find a time slot that is best suited to your skills.
